Brittany Burgunder said, “Mindset is everything.” The author of “Safety in Numbers” battled with eating disorders, and, by changing her fixed mindset to a growth mindset, was able to overcome and finally live.
Your mindset is a set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world and yourself. It influences how you think, feel, and behave in any given situation.
I have battled depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember. Depression does not want you to have a growth mindset, but a fixed, negative, ne’er-do-well attitude. I was not fun to be around. I didn’t even like being around me. I just couldn’t escape myself.
After my brother passed away, folks told me things I should or should not do with my life, whether I asked for their advice or not. Nothing was a help coming from other people anyway.
With my faith and help from above, I realized there had to be more in this life than misery. And boy was I miserable. It took a while to get that low, so it would take a while to get back up into a better, stronger, more confident (any confidence at all, really) me.
I started changing at least one negative thought, and there were many, into a positive one. A slow process it was indeed, but I kept pushing myself to see past my negative, lousy attitude and mindset. Things I was told as a child and ways I was treated attributed to my depression and anxiety. I just got tired of hating myself, my life.
I started sticking post-it notes to my mirror with positive affirmations and Bible verses to set the tone for my day.
Challenges help me to grow. That thought falls under the “Growth Mindset” and was a huge idea for me. I have gone through loss, every weird tic, disorder, depression, anxiety, and many addictions I have to help others who may be going through the same trials.
I’m here to tell you, it is not easy. But you are stronger than you believe you are.
This is coming from someone who dreaded to wake up and face the day because I felt there was no point or purpose to my non-existence or my “non-life” as I always called it.
As I improved upon my life and surrounded myself with more positive people, places, things, and activities, I steadily grew and became stronger, mentally and physically.
Where I was isolating and staying away from the world, I started to go out more and, even if I was alone, realized it wasn’t as bad as I had made it up in my mind to be.
Setbacks would show up, like feeling guilty for having some sort of a life for myself or being put down or corrected by others, but I know I have a higher being that dictates how I feel about myself and no other human can do that.
You have to have faith. You have to believe there is more to life than hating it.
I love the question of, “When you’re on a train going through a dark tunnel, you don’t just jump of do you? No, you know there is a light at the end of the tunnel.” If you have faith in the man-made, you won’t get as far as faith in the man-maker.
Am I making this about faith? You bet I am.
It is the only way that I am still alive, and I’m here to tell you that you are strong and capable of leading a great life. You just have to believe.
I’ll leave this here, you can. You can be whatever you create and desire in your mind.
Change your mindset, change your life.
