“You must be the change you hope to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi
Changes like moving to a new home, starting a new daycare, or divorce are difficult for toddlers because:
It’s hard for them to understand why a change happens.
They lack the emotional skills to cope with the confusion accompanying a change.
They don’t yet grasp the concept of time, so they struggle to understand that with time they will adapt.
Kids resist change for different reasons. Some crave order, routine, and control so changing things, especially when they have no control, leads to resistance. Other kids fear the unknown. Then there are children who simply don’t want to stop doing what feels rewarding to them to do something else.
To help your toddler cope with a big change, try these tips:
Balance change with consistency by sticking to familiar routines as much as possible.
Involve them in the change. For example, ask them to help pack toys for a move, or their backpack for the first day at new daycare.
Avoid surprises. It’s best to prepare toddlers for change!
Remember that even if your toddler isn’t outwardly emotional, they still need support.
Does your fear of change keep you from living fully?
